how we work

HEJMO offers support and guidance to leaders, leadership teams and organizations shaping the future.
HEJMO’s work is guided by principles offering orientation and reliability in a complex world. Unfortunately, toolkits, recipes, best practices and masterplans won’t do the trick – at least not alone. Working accordingly to these principles prompts our clients to say that working with us is “somehow different and extremely effective”.
Our theoretical foundation stems from philosophy, psychology, system theory and organizational theory, behavioral economics, neuro science, communication studies, and computer science.
INTEGRATE INTERVENTIONS INTO DAILY BUSINESS.
We deeply believe in integrating change interventions fully with your day-to-day work as well as your strategy work. Change consulting is not about an additional workshop, another project stream or a training. Without proper integration into your business, effectiveness is limited. That’s why we love to work with what’s already there. We are interested in existing meetings, regular workshops and your operating system – that’s where we would like to make a difference. We do as much as necessary and as little as possible.
CONSIDER THE PRICE.
With every shiny vision of the future, comes the price of unwanted consequences. If you miss to deal with the price early on, chances are high that commitment and accountability crumble and implementation fails. Commitment stems first and foremost from committing to the price – not to a shiny vision. Despite creating a compelling case for change, the price needs to be realistically assessed and taken into account when making a choice.
BE AWARE OF CHOICES.
We treat and respect organizations, teams and individuals as systems. Pragmatically, this means they are responsible for changing or not changing – even though it might feel different. We consider ourselves responsible for confronting these systems with how they create their world and how they make choices. HEJMO thereby offers its clients fresh perspectives on their situation and opportunities to change it.
GO WITH THE FLOW.
Complexity means forecasts and predictions are possible in limited forms. Stringent planning is counterproductive to successful change.
Especially accompanying large transformations have taught us to plan ahead only in short cycles while having the overall story and levers always at hand. Attention to weak signals and mindfulness help us providing you with reliability while avoiding inefficiencies.
BE AWARE THAT CULTURE EATS EVERYTHING FOR BREAKFAST.
We conceptualize culture as patterns that emerge over time describing how communication, decision making and interaction look. These patterns and dynamics are mostly well established, deep-rooted, hard-wired and very difficult to change. In respect to transformation and change initiatives, it is crucial to understand which ones are dysfunctional in regards to the way forward – and which will help to drive change.
WATCH OUT FOR PINK ELEPHANTS AND HOLY COWS.
We are convinced that nothing happens without a reason. Without understanding and accepting the status-quo, existing realities and recurring (organizational, team and individual) patterns, change would not be sustainable. That is one of the (many) paradoxes of change. Successful change starts with naming pink elephants in the room (even if they are holy cows) in order to jointly gaze at them, admire them for their strengths, and then step-by-step watch them shrink. You will come to realize that this step is essential for change to happen.
CO-CREATE.
We do not claim for ourselves to know what’s best for our clients. However, we do consider it our job to offer guidance and fresh perspectives as well as confront and challenge our clients where necessary. We always co-create with our clients. We see ourselves as partners of equals and consider the relationship between our clients and us key to our joint endeavors.
